Yamaha YCL-220 Bass Clarinet - Student Model Instrument

Description

The instrument for sale is a used Yamaha YCL-220 Bass Clarinet.
The bass clarinet is playable and functional. It includes the mouthpiece (mouthpiece is chipped – see info. below), ligature,mouthpiece cap, reed, and hard case.
Instrument Specifications

1) Instrument Body: (see pictures)
The bass clarinet body is in good condition.
No cracks in the plastic.
There is some wear and build up on the silver plating of the keys, but most of the finish looks like it will clean up with the appropriate polishing cloth.
The neck screw is functioning well and the opening for the neck is completely round.
The tenon where the bell connects is in good condition,with the cork looking good.
All posts are straight and all springs and keys open and close.
Pads seem to be in decent to good condition
2) Instrument Neck (see pictures):
The neck contains a pin-sized ding with the silver finish showing some wear and buildup. It appears most of the buildup can be cleaned up with the appropriate polishing cloth.
The neck fits and holds to the bass clarinet body securely.
The tenon where the neck attaches to the body is round without any dents, but there looks to be some metal fatigue and scuffing on the inside.
The end of the neck where the mouthpiece attaches is also showing some metal wear/fatigue, but is still round and holds the mouthpiece secure.
3)Bell (see pictures)
The bell shows scuffing and scratching, but the appropriate polishing cloth maybe able to clean it.
The peg stand is included and fits securely with the screw on the attachment of the bell.
-The rubber floor stopper on the peg (which prevents scratches to hard floors) is split.
There is a small dent and a couple dings on the left side of the bell. Otherwise, the lip and bottom bow of the bell have no dents or dings.
Bell fits secure onto the tenon/cork of the instrument body.
4) Mouthpiece & Accessories (see pictures):
The mouthpiece is chipped at the top and will need to be replaced.
The ligature is a Rovner Dark-3RL ligature with mouthpiece cap. This is an upgraded ligature in very good condition.
I have included an unsealed Vandoren bass clarinet reed, strength 2 ½.
5) Case
The case is beginning to show some signs of wear, with the material being lightweight on the section above the locks.
There are also rivets along that top section, with a tear in the fabric/leather.
The bottom of the case also contains contains some slight tears to the fabric/leather.

General Information
:
I recently greased the corks on the tenon and mouthpiece and test played the instrument using the chipped mouthpiece. I was able to produce all notes from B flat 4 down to E3 with some slight air resistance. B natural 4 to C5 and up was inconsistent.
To further test play, I swapped out the chipped mouthpiece for a different mouthpiece from another bass clarinet. I was able to produce B4 and C5. The upper register notes (clarion range) were speaking, but with some resistance in the tone. B flat 4 down to E3, however, became much louder and fuller with the different mouthpiece, having eliminated the slight air resistance from the chipped mouthpiece.

Instrument Use
:
I am a former band director who purchased this instrument (through personal funds) to be used in a local school instrumental music program. This instrument was used by one student, for two years. Their experience included once a week instruction and taking the instrument home to practice.
I am not currently teaching and wish to sell the instrument to a family, band director, school program or musician that can make good use of it. I recommend the instrument be serviced by an instrument repair technician to make sure it is in optimal playing shape. Although, if you choose to bypass a repair tech in the short term, I think with the purchase of a new mouthpiece this bass clarinet is still ready to play and would make for a good starter instrument for the elementary/middle school band student.
